What has happened to the Olympics over the past few decades? It seems like with each passing Olympics, there is less and less fanfare, viewership, and national pride. I think that this is sad that this is ocurring to the games because it’s great to see nations compete for two weeks in the summer and winter. What has happened throughout the years though is that the competetive spirit has given way to the I must win at all costs attitude. This has plagued the Olympics with more cheating scadal, steroids, and an overall apathy from viewers. Also, the rise of professional athletes in the games have hurt the games. I for one don’t care if the USA basketball team wins the gold medal, in fact I will turn in to see them lose. This is because pro athletes don’t care if they win the games or not, they don’t play for national pride. The play out of obligation, and just hope to avoid some kind of injury that will prevent them from playing next year. In fact; the majority of owners, coaches, and players would be happier if the pros would turn down the olympic team out of fear of major injury. I like the olympic games; the athletes and countries just need to return to the pride of represting your country and competetive spirit and leave behind the must win mentality. GO USA!
