I don’t know about you, but there’s always something about me and Thanksgiving Day. Football, turkey, greenbean caserole, stuffing; you know what I mean. With all this tempting food in front of you, the last thing you think about is you trying to fit into your dress pants come Monday morning. Next Thanksgiving I’m going to take slim shots. The year that is drawing toward its close has been filled with the blessings of fruitful years and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the Source from which they come, others have been added which are of so extraordinary a nature that they can not fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever-watchful providence of Almighty God.
In the midst of a civil war of unequaled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign states to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere, except in the theater of military conflict, while that theater has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union.
Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the field of peaceful industry to the national defense have not arrested the plow, the shuttle, or the ship; the ax has enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than theretofore. Population has steadily increased notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege, and the battlefield, and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.
No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy.
It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently, and gratefully acknowledged, as with one heart and one voice, by the whole American people. I do therefore invite my fellow-citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next as a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.
In testimony wherof I have herunto set my hand and caused the seal of the United States to be affixed.

I will be back to normal posts shortly, until then Happy Thanksgiving. Even in desperate times, we need to be thankful for what we have.
WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me “to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANKSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:”
NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;– for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;– for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;– and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;– to enable us all, whether in publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

I was watching the tv last night, and an ad for a local radio station appeard. The advertisement was not provocative, sexual, or insulting by any means; it just advertised that it has already started playing Christmas music. What ever happened to waiting until the day after Thanksgiving? I know that times are tough, and the Holiday season is full of joy, warmth and family; but Thanksgiving needs to be celebrated first, and then the holiday season can kick off the Friday after with football, shopping and sleeping.
The main reason that this effects me is not because it’s “too early”, or because I’m a traditionalist. The main reason that this effects me is because Thanksgiving is a time to slow down; and give thanks. In a time and society where we all try to keep up with the Jones’, it is very easy for us to forget to be thankful for all that we actually do have- health, family, shelter, etc.
The other resaon is because the holiday season is turning from a season of tradition, spirituality, waiting, and family- to a season of I want this, and I want to give the best gift because…. The sad reality of the holiday season is that it is turning out to be like any other time of the year; which leaves us with Thanksgiving has a holiday that truly stands out as special. And by celebrating Christmas too soon, this special day is being overlooked and losing its precious meaning.
All of us are looking for that extra umph to help us lose wait. Some people attempt exercise, diet, or even diet pills. One of the newest supplements is CLA; Conjugated Linoleic Acid. Why Democracy may not be the best form of Government
admin / Category: UncategorizedNow don’t get me wrong. I love my freedom as a citizen, and I love being able to elect my local, state, and federal leaders. It’s what our founding father’s dreamt of, and it’s what makes being an American so special. The one thing I don’t like about a democracy is that it is consistantly inconsistant, and each time we elect a new leader, they spend time getting rid bills and policies that were signed by the previous president.
Take Obama for instance. He is going into office in January, and he has already made it clear that he is going to use executive order to overturn some of Bush’s policies; mainly stem cell research and oil drilling. Now, I’m not going to go into the ethical or practical issues regarding this decision, but I what I do want to observe is the stability issues involved in our democracy.
After Obama leads for 4-8 years, our next president is going through the same thing that Obama is going through…. eliminate policies that he doesn’t approve of. I understand that he is following the constitution, and has constitutional right to do this, but when you add the midterm elections to the mix; the instability of Washington is massive.
I’m not saying that we need to a socialist, dictator. or permanent regime in office; that goes well beyond the constitution; and doesn’t represent core American values. But, the government that was formed was intended to have more than 2 parties controlling the country, and all parties were to negotiate and give and take. The environment in Washington though is not give and take, and both parties want full control because the hate, greed, and partisanship is rampant; which is causing the crisis that we are in right now to magnify.
I don’t know what needs to be done, I wish I had a clue. But the stability of our country hangs in the balance; and right we are about as stable a tree in a hurricane.
Although I am disappointed about the results of the election, I am the type of person who believes that we must stand behind our president. We can disagree with what he believes, and bills that he signs into laws, but we must respect him and the office. So, I believe that we must all pray for Barack, and hope that he uses sound judgement and wisdom in office.
Having said that… I want my party back. The Republicans are going to go back to Washington, and “reinvent” themselves. They aren’t looking to 2010 as much as they are for 2012. My hope is that they don’t look too hard, but go back to their roots. I believe two things must happen:
1) They must return to the party of Regan. Be fiscally responsible, use force as a last resort, and govern with dignity and strenth.
2) The religious right needs to go away. I believe that the faithful need to be present, and exercise their right to vote. I bring my religious convictions to the polling place. But… this is not what made the republicans strong in the ’80s, and I believe that they are the reason that the party has come crashing down.
As I look forward to what the republican party will do, I fear that they are going to search too hard, and miss the mark. I fear that they are going to become social moderates to attract independants and conservative democrats. This is not the way to go… it will lead to further distruction. The party needs to look back at the 80’s and early 90’s, and become the party of Regan and the party that tamed Bill Clinton.
We’ll see what happens.
