I’m as much as a football fan as the next guy. There is nothing like watching the number 1 and number 2 team taking the field and beating the crap out of each other. There is nothing like arriving early at a Sun Devil game and watching the band march right next to the stadium as they play the fight song as fans cheer and clap.

But football is football, and it is not the end all or be all. I understand that the football program is the cash cow of any major university, but there needs to be a line drawn. In a time where jobs are being cut, hiring freezes are taking place, and tuition is rising at an alarming rate; ASU announced that they were going to spend 170 million dollars on stadium renovations. Now, I’m certain they have the money to do it; at least I hope, but somewhere down the line, student’s are going to have to pay. They’ll pay through sports programs being cut, tuition rising, or cost of books sky rocketing. Now is not the time.

The football program is the center point of the majority of sports programs. The sights, the sounds, and the fun are a way for students and fans to forget about what is going on in their lives. But a university exists to educate the next generation, and it’s getting harder to send students to college. Now is not the time to add a 170 million dollar tab.
